Hello, I'm Andrew SIU. It's my great pleasure to introduce myself. I joined HSBC Insurance in February 2007 as a Manager and Actuary in the Actuarial department for our Hong Kong Insurance Business. I was born and raised in Hong Kong. I majored in Mathematics and Statistics and I am a fellowship member of the Society of Actuaries in the US.
What does an actuary do? I have been asked the same question several times during my career. Many actuaries work in product pricing, financial reporting, business valuation and risk management in insurance and pension business. We analyse the financial consequences of risk, evaluate the likelihood and the impact of adverse events that may occur, and design ways to manage them.
What motivated me to join HSBC Insurance is that it has the region's largest Bancassurance channel and is experiencing dynamic growth. I worked in several agency-based insurance companies before joining HSBC Insurance, so I understand how valuable Bancassurance experience is in Hong Kong and Asia. Looking at the growth of HSBC Insurance, it's expected that Bancassurance will soon become the market norm.
In order to deal with the daily challenges of this job, my advice is to be flexible and focused. As a manager, one of my responsibilities is to maximise the Company's "resource-outcome" relationship from both a client and a company perspective. To do that, I prioritise the required tasks based on their importance and available resources. This is also my strategy for achieving a work-life balance.
Finally, I would like to share the following message, which is critical, I think, to a successful and happy career: "Know yourself, and then figure out a way to apply your strengths in your daily work life."
